Personal Life

Margaret Ann Ireland valued privacy in her family life. She and her first husband, lawyer Norwood Carter, raised their daughter Nicola and son Cyrus in New Brunswick and in Toronto where another son, Erskine Ireland Carter, was born. Following her husband's death in Toronto, Margaret Ann moved to New York City with her three children in 1972, as the wife of management consultant Walter Nagel. In 1986 the family left New York for Canada to reside in New Brunswick, Margaret Ann's former home. When Walter Nagel died in 2004, Margaret Ann continued to live in her house in Saint John, overlooking the Bay of Fundy.


Interests

Margaret Ann Ireland's support of arts groups and university students has reflected her focus on young people in Canada. In 1990 she became a founding member of the New Brunswick Arts Board. In 1992 the Governor General of Canada conferred upon her the Commemorative Medal for the 125th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada "in recognition of significant contribution to compatriots, community and to Canada."
